This is a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) elective Freedom of Speech Enforcement online training course offered for Texas Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators. These protections include the right to express opinions, debate differing or unpopular viewpoints, voice criticism, and engage in lawful protest. This course examines the constitutional principles governing freedom of speech and assembly and their application to law enforcement. Participants will explore the important role peace officers play in protecting individual rights while maintaining public safety and enforcing the law. Particular attention is given to lawful dissent, public demonstrations, protected versus unprotected expression, and the constitutional considerations officers must recognize when responding to speech-related incidents.
