Overview

This is a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) elective RADAR and LIDAR Refresher: Accuracy, Compliance, and Courtroom Articulation #2065 online training course designed for Texas Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators who have previously completed initial RADAR and/or LIDAR operator training. The course may also be completed by Jailers and Telecommunicators for applicable continuing education credit.

Important: This is a refresher course only. It is not an initial RADAR or LIDAR certification course and does not qualify an officer as a newly certified RADAR or LIDAR operator.

Speed measurement duties extend beyond identifying speeding violations. They include improving roadway safety, reducing crash risks, protecting the public, and ensuring traffic laws are enforced fairly, accurately, and effectively.

Law enforcement officers assigned speed enforcement responsibilities should maintain a working understanding of applicable legal standards, operational safety practices, equipment limitations, proper testing procedures, and real-world traffic conditions.

This refresher course reinforces previously learned knowledge and critical operational skills associated with the proper use of RADAR and LIDAR technologies. Emphasis is placed on officer safety, measurement accuracy, legal compliance, equipment reliability, documentation, and clear courtroom articulation.

Ultimately, effective speed measurement involves proactive risk reduction, lawful and defensible enforcement, and the protection of lives through professional traffic operations.

Please note, the entire course, final exam(s), and course evaluation(s) must be completed in order to receive four (4) hours of course credit.
