An often quoted Supreme Court saying is …Officers are often forced to make split-second judgments in circumstances that are tense, uncertain and rapidly evolving. Most people would probably agree that officers who encounter exigent circumstances should be permitted to do whatever is reasonably necessary to quickly defuse what is confronting them. The courts understand that officers must act quickly when they are facing an emergency, but they impose on officers a duty to act responsibly. This course is designed to aid you in better understanding the various aspects of exigent circumstances, what is reasonable, and what is allowable and not so in an emergency.
