Overview

This is a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) elective Suicide Prevention in Police Lockups online training course offered for Texas Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators.

Suicide remains one of the most serious risks associated with police lockups, holding cells, and temporary detention facilities. When a suicide or attempted suicide occurs, responsible officers are often shocked and unprepared, particularly when they have received little or no formal training in detainee supervision, monitoring, or suicide prevention.

These risks may be increased when detainees are housed in facilities that do not fully meet applicable detention, health, or safety standards. In many agencies, detainee monitoring responsibilities are assigned to personnel who are also performing other duties, which can result in inconsistent observation and delayed recognition of warning signs.

This online course provides law enforcement officers and detention personnel with an increased awareness of the life-threatening, professional, and liability-related risks posed by suicidal individuals who are temporarily detained. Participants will learn to recognize common suicide risk factors and warning signs, understand the importance of consistent monitoring and documentation, and identify appropriate actions for managing suicidal detainees.

The course emphasizes practical measures officers can take to protect detainees, save lives, strengthen facility operations, and reduce personal and agency liability.

Please note, the entire course final exam(s), and course evaluation(s) must be completed in order to receive two (2) hours of course credit.
